Cancer prevention

Cancer prevention focuses heavily on modifiable lifestyle factors, as these choices can significantly lower the risk for many different types of cancer.

Here are the core recommendations for reducing cancer risk, based on major health organizations:

Top Cancer Prevention Strategies

1. Avoid Tobacco Use

 * Do not use tobacco in any form (cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, etc.). Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of cancer, linked to cancers of the lung, mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, stomach, and more.

 * Avoid Secondhand Smoke: Exposure to the smoke of others also increases risk.

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight and Be Physically Active

 * Achieve and Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess body weight or obesity is linked to an increased risk of at least 13 different types of cancer.

 * Be Physically Active: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity on most days of the week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. Less sitting is also important.

3. Eat a Healthy Diet

While no single food can guarantee prevention, dietary patterns matter:

 * Focus on Plants: Eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, beans, and other legumes. Aim for five or more servings of vegetables and fruits daily.

 * Choose Whole Grains: Select whole grains (like brown rice, whole wheat) over refined grains.

 * Limit Red and Processed Meats: Reduce consumption of red meat (beef, pork, lamb) and limit or avoid processed meats (bacon, sausage, deli meats).

 * Limit Sugar-Sweetened Drinks and high-calorie foods that contribute to weight gain.

4. Limit Alcohol Consumption

 * It is best not to drink alcohol at all. If you do drink, limit consumption, as alcohol use is linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, breast, and colon/rectum. The less you drink, the lower your risk.

5. Protect Yourself from the Sun

 * Avoid Overexposure to UV Radiation: This is the primary cause of skin cancer.

 * Practice Sun Safety: Seek shade (especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.), cover up with protective clothing, wear a wide-brimmed hat, use sunglasses, and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) liberally.

 * Never Use Indoor Tanning Beds or Lamps.

Additional Preventive Measures

 * Get Vaccinated: Vaccines can protect against cancer-causing infections:

   * HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine: Protects against most cervical cancers and several other cancers.

   * Hepatitis B Vaccine: Protects against a virus that can cause liver cancer.

 * Practice Safer Sex: This can help prevent the spread of HPV and Hepatitis B.

 * Get Recommended Screenings: Screening tests (like mammograms, colonoscopies, and Pap tests) are crucial because they can detect pre-cancerous changes or cancer early, when treatment is most effective. Talk to your doctor about which screenings are right for your age and risk level.
